History
Scottsdale Healthcare opened its first hospital in 1962 as the 120-bed City Hospital of Scottsdale, when Scottsdale was home to only 10,000 residents. Today, Scottsdale is home to over 225,000 residents and is a popular vacation destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
As the city grows, so has its need for quality, accessible healthcare. To better represent its diversification beyond the scope of a single hospital, in 1981 the company was incorporated into a not-for-profit community health system and in 1998 adopted the name Scottsdale Healthcare. Today, Scottsdale Healthcare includes:
- Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn
- Scottsdale Healthcare Shea
- Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak
- Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare
- Scottsdale Clinical Research Institute
- Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation
- Scottsdale Healthcare Home Health Services
- Scottsdale Healthcare Realty Company
Scottsdale Healthcare's medical centers offer comprehensive healthcare for patients of all ages, ranging from emergency services to obstetrics, general, specialized and minimally invasive surgery, diagnostics and rehabilitation services and complete cancer care services.
Scottsdale Healthcare’s guiding vision is “Setting the standard for excellence in personalized healthcare.” In 2006, Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn and Scottsdale Healthcare Shea earned Magnet recognition, the gold standard in nursing, from the American Credentialing Center. Only 4% of all healthcare organizations in the United States have achieved Magnet recognition, according to the ANCC.
Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak was designed to incorporate the same award-winning patient care practices. It will be included in Scottsdale Healthcare’s next Magnet survey.
Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn opened in 1962 in downtown Scottsdale. It is a full-service acute-care hospital with 337 inpatient beds. The hospital's Level I trauma center is consistently one of the busiest in the state and underwent a major expansion in 2004.
A new a freestanding surgery center opened in 2003, and the hospital was designated as a Primary Stroke Center in 2005. Regarded as a leader in neurosurgery, orthopedics and rehabilitation, Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn is the medical anchor for the city’s resurgent downtown area.

Advanced cancer treatment, research, prevention, education and support are provided in one location.
Partnerships with the University of Arizona’s Arizona Cancer Center, Translational Genomics Research Institute and International Genomics Consortium offer increased local access to first-in-human clinical trials of new targeted cancer drugs, cancer prevention research, and advanced cancer treatment in a single, convenient location.
In 2005 Scottsdale Healthcare launched the Scottsdale Clinical Research Institute and became a primary clinical research site for the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen). TGen Clinical Research Services opened in October 2005 and includes a Genomic Medicine and Individual Therapy Clinic and a Pancreatic Cancer Clinic.
The Arizona Cancer Center's Cancer Prevention and Control Programs and national headquarters of the SHADE Foundation are also housed in the Center.
Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak is the organization's third medical center, located in Grayhawk on a 26-acre parcel just east of the intersection of Scottsdale Road and Thompson Peak Parkway, north of the Loop 101 freeway. It is the site of Scottsdale Healthcare’s third hospital and serves the North Scottsdale, Northeast Phoenix, Cave Creek and Carefree areas.
The hospital opened in November 2007 with 64 inpatient beds and shelled space for future expansion to 120 beds. As the need for additional inpatient capacity arises, the hospital has the ability to expand to 184 beds.
The first medical office building at Thompson Peak housed physician offices representing a variety of specialties and opened in 2000. Additional medical office buildings are planned adjacent to the hospital.
Thompson Peak is designed to become the hospital of choice for residents living north of Loop 101 by providing extraordinary care for common health concerns. Services offered at Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak will include:
- Inpatient and outpatient surgery
- Emergency department
- Cardiac catheterization lab
- Orthopedics and neurology
- Urology and gynecology
- Intensive care unit, endoscopy
- Respiratory and physical therapy
- Diagnostic imaging services and more
The emergency department is not a trauma center, but is a full service emergency department staffed by the same quality physicians that staff the Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn and Scottsdale Healthcare Shea medical centers.
Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation is the organization's philanthropic partner. A separate, non-profit corporation, the Foundation's primary focus is to raise funds through annual, major and endowment contributions, which are used for the enhancement of Scottsdale Healthcare's services and programs.
